O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol at the beginning of 2005 when she was still a high-school student. She was able to advance into the top 100 courtesy of the judges' enthusiasm in her performance. O'Neil was praised by the judges. But she lost badly in the top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were stunned by the results and instructed the crowd to vote for contestants like Melissa, who had most impressive singing talent. O'Neil wasn't in the third place again following a series of consistently outstanding performance. With two other stunning performances on September 7, 2005, when O'Neil and Rex Goudie advanced to the competition's final two contestants, the judge Werner reportedly predicted that the headlines in the morning papers will read: O'Neil beat Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner and the youngest winner of the show's time . O'Neil was contacted right away from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her win of Canadian Idol.
